Now the dust has settled, everyone can agree that 2017 was one of the best years of the generation so far. Breath of the Wild astonished everyone and shifted millions of Switches, while other huge exclusives like Mario Odyssey, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and Cuphead gave players of any console a reason to cherish their chosen machine.
However, no matter how strong last year was, 2018 is shaping up to be more than a worthy successor. Although there's plenty still to be announced, a strong selection of games is already slated to drop over the next 12 months, including long-anticipated sequels, brand new original games and yet another array of exclusive titles from Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo.
Even better, thanks to the reaction against some of the biggest controversies of last year, including a huge backlash aimed at loot boxes and the final death knell of season passes, anticipation is high to see whether the games releasing over the next couple of months will adopt more consumer-friendly business practices.
Some titles are gaining more traction than others though, and already it's easy to see which big names will be dominating the conversation (and GOTY lists) come this time next year. Anticipation is high, and if pre-release trailers and videos are anything to go on, the hype is more than justified.
