2017 has been a great year for gaming. The Nintendo Switch took the gaming community by storm, and with that, came two releases that are frontrunners for many peoples' Game of the Year - Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild. Not to be outdone, Microsoft released the much anticipated Xbox One X this year as well.
On the software side, Sony's biggest new venture was Horizon Zero Dawn, which became a strong candidate for game of the year alongside some steady competition. Another candidate, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds came out of nowhere and became one of the most played titles of the year, alongside one of Steam's most lucrative.
With the amount of good 2017 had, it also had its fair share of bad.
Microtransactions popped up everywhere and peed off fans to no end, developers were seen as predatory and dishonest, and people said and did a lot of things they shouldn't have. There's never a shortage of controversy in the gaming world, and 2017 proved that in abundance, even if the majority came towards its back end.
