20 Best Video Games Of 2017

18. Tekken 7

Namco

Of all the legacy franchises in gaming, 2017 saw the return of not only Sonic, Mario and Zelda, but the mighty Tekken in a numbered instalment for the first time in 10 years.

Brilliantly, Namco didn't rest on their laurels, reenergising traditional gameplay with a number of specific meter burn mechanics, animation-overriding power attacks and a gorgeous new look. It resulted in the most meticulously proficient Tekken yet, even resulting in a slow-motion zoom whenever a bout's final blow could go either way.

The only knock against Tekken 7 comes from its other new elements (the campaign, for example) being pretty naff. We finally get a resolution of who is ultimately superior between Heihachi and Kazuya, as Namco - at least for now - have the stones to kill off one of the most popular characters in fighting game history.

Still, as a set of game modes and time-tested mechanics that multiple generations hold very dearly, Tekken 7 is a powerful fighting package.
