Who says a broken game can't still be memorable?

Nintendo

Ever since the first games arrived for Nintendo's handheld systems in 1996, Pokémon has been a series that's captured the imagination and affection of two generations of players. It's spawned an immensely popular TV series and a set of movie tie-ins, along with a shedload of great merchandise and other ways to play. Now, with Pokémon Go pretty much taking over the world, the franchise appears to be stronger than ever.

Unsurprisingly, however, this series of games that centres itself around anthropomorphised creatures battling each other with elemental powers has had more than its fair share of truly bizarre moments. From desperate, dark moments in the narratives of the games through to some truly unbelievable Pokédex entries in the all-powerful encyclopaedia, Pokémon has shocked us on many an occasion.

With seven generations and twenty years worth of crazy moments to choose from, the task of narrowing down some of the very best is certainly a tough one, but who doesn't love a challenge?

Here are twenty of the biggest WTF moments in Pokémon history!

20. Lampent Is Waiting For You To Die

The Pokémon Company

Introduced in Pokémon's fifth generation with the Black & White games, Lampent quickly established itself as one of the most malicious souls in the series' giant roster of creatures. Well, that's apparently the case if its Pokédex entries are to be believed.

In the fifth and sixth generation Pokédexes, Lampent's entries suggest that the candle-like fire at its core is fuelled by spirits it absorbs from dead bodies. Some entries describe this fire as "baleful", with others even going on to explain that Lampent actually "hangs around hospitals waiting for people to pass on."

Pretty creepy stuff if you're an aspiring Ghost type collector. Just make sure that Lampent isn't anywhere in sight if you're looking like death after a particularly heavy Friday night on the tiles; we don't want the only spirit left in your body to be the ones you were downing with Lucy from Accounts, do we?
