Finally, after months of speculation, genial debate and pre-pubescent teenage boys getting over-excited, Black Ops 2, the latest installment in the Call of Duty franchise has been released. The most successful video-game series of all time, Call of Duty has seen nine installments with it’s latest issue making $500 million in just one day.
While the first three Call of Duty games were, in my opinion, inferior to the initial Medal of Honor games, with the release of the XBox 360 and the PS3, Call of Duty stole the march on Medal of Honor with the release of Modern Warfare, establishing the online-multiplayer frenzy that exists to this day.
Of course, the most important aspect of multiplayer are the maps. No one wants to play on a crude, badly-designed map, but a well thought out one. Obviously people have different game styles and therefore different opinions on what map type is the best. Personally, I prefer smaller maps as I am an attack-minded player, relishing the prospect of rushing around the maps.
In this article, I will do a count-down of the 20 greatest maps in the Call of Duty franchise up to Black Ops 2. However, only maps that came with the base-game will be featured in this article.

are you pi***d Carentan the original htat good it was included in call of duty 2, remade for the first modern warfare, Toujane missing, brecourt another done for cod2 and made for modern warfare sorry but i think you not got a clue about the COD franchise
The list is from Modern Warfare onwards when multiplayer and PSN kickstarted. I’m not sure why it doesn’t state that in the introduction anymore but it did.
Where’s Favela? Surely one of top ranked maps.
Favela was a decent map and I know it was liked by many but I personally couldn’t stand it, hence why it isn’t in my list.
Personally I was expecting Crash to be number one. That map was just too damn good. I wouldn’t rank Dome above it. Dome was pretty much a half map just mirrored. Crossfire woulda been my number 2 or 3.
Outskirts was definitely a great map now that I think of it. There were plenty of good sniping spots, including the bell tower. Even though I knew everyone was looking at it, I still went up there and sniped the crap outta everyone.
terrible, terrible list. How do you leave Overgrown off the list? It’s right up there as the best COD map along with Crash.
So you’re stating the list is terrible because I didn’t put your favourite map in? I couldn’t stand Overgrown, I could never play it – hence why I didn’t include it. By all means however, get your own list published on here.
Any list of best call of duty maps that includes a MW3 map, let alone 4 don’t deserve to be taken seriously.
Favela?
That image just made me realise Cliffside is the template for Turbine on Black Ops 2 with walls n stuff just built up in slightly different ways
Maybe, the design is somewhat inverted, with how the players move in relation to the walls. I think it was more of just Treyarch wanting a long skinny map. Part of the reason I don’t think it’s the template is because they already reused it in Black Ops. The Hazard map from the Annihilation Pack is Cliffside in a different presentation.
sorry for a 2nd comment but this list should just be the MW maps in the top 10 minus Downpour because all the new ones are dog sh*t
Well, I’d say 10-15 of your top 20 would make mine. I am not too familiar with WaW, mostly just played Zombies on that game. Personally, I think Crash is the best. The one map I’m really surprised isn’t on here is Hardhat, even more than Favela. Good list, sorry you have to deal with the usual internet commenters.
