20 Things Only Resident Evil Fans Will Understand

20. Doors Are Objects Of Terror

A lot of gamers moan about doors in the older games of the franchise €“ that they slow things down, ruin the momentum of the game and they take for ages to open. The characters in the more contemporary games can simply kick doors down with no loss of continuity. But that era of doors is sorely missed: overlaid with eerie music, when you opened a door the levels of fear and suspense were high. How many zombies? Lickers? Would a Hunter come leaping your way? The opening doors were also technically necessary to shield loading times €“ so they had a practical function - but they will always frighten the wits out of every player, every time.

19. Typewriters Aren't Just Relics Of A Bygone Era

Up to Resident Evil 4 typewriters were of course the method of saving your progress and as a very big result Resident Evil fans have a love/hate relationship with them. Novice players would breathe a sigh of relief at the mere sight of one, but expert players abhorred the sight of them for to make a save would dent their precious ranking. The alternative of course was also a very risky strategy and could lead to the disappointment of finishing the game without saving only to be slaughtered by the boss at the end. While the typewriters are obsolete in the newer games, for the retro gamer, the sound of the keys typing out your save point is usually accompanied with the welcome warm sweat of relief.
