25 Scariest Gaming Moments Of The 2000s

Nothing like a naked fat guy in a pig mask to really keep you awake at night.

By it's very nature, gaming offers an unparalleled level of interactivity; the sheer exhilaration brought on by experiencing the thrills of such a vast range of genres is impossible to replicate in any other medium. So, when you couple that level of agency with a genre built entirely on the concept of scaring people witless, you get an experience unlike any other. But fear's a funny thing, isn't it? It affects us all in different ways, and sometimes there's just no telling what might trigger some goosebumps or a curdle of the stomach. For some it might be threats of bodily harm, whilst for others it's not the idea of physical suffering that terrifies so much as psychological torment. Whatever the case may be, everyone has their own little personal bogeyman to contend with. It's no different with gaming, really - whether it's facing down hordes of necromorphs, narrowly dodging Pyramid Head's sword or wandering the desolate streets of Ravenholm - there's a bevy of hair-raising moments worth singling out for the sheer terror they've induced. And while many of them come from horror titles familiar to us all, sometimes the most memorable scares can come from the unlikeliest of places.
