25 Unforgettable Moments In Video Game Physics

Beautiful, dynamic, and hilarious ways that motion and weight defined gaming...

It is no coincidence that the Laws of Physics - which fundamentally govern our understanding of the known universe - have also facilitated some of our most potent gaming memories. We could just thank Father Science for keeping our personal game machines from floating away, but that's far too pragmatic a form of praise. (But great job, Universe!) As we largely remain socially restrained from indulging in our more animalistic, playfully absurd, real-world physics experiments, we must take refuge in the imaginary representations our virtual worlds provide. As the necessary hardware and software have evolved, the intricacies of in-game weight and gravity have become powerful tools for selling a game world's tangibility. They've also paved the way for some truly ridiculous representations of reality, especially when they break. Whether grounded and subtle or unapologetically bombastic, well balanced in-game physics immerse us in these virtual worlds by connecting them to the real world in a way we corporeally understand. When we pick something up and let go, the wholly reactionary, uncanny drop, stop and roll of that object is a random, albeit logical process that our brains recognize. We're all experts in existing, after all, and when we see a good fake, we aren't fooled. All the same, our hearts swell when the right, real world factors authentically coalesce. Ultimately, in-game physics - just like any gameplay system - rely on a set of rules. If Laurence Fishburne taught us anything way back in that digital training dojo, it's that, "Some of these rules can be bent. Others... can be broken." The best video game physics ever used motion and weight to tell a story. At times, these were stupid, even meta-ironic stories, but nonetheless... they granted us the power of personally dynamic solutions and made the natural motion of our grandest fantasies all but possible. These are the moments we'll never forget...

25. Stealing From People Who Just Can€™t Let Go - GTA

Grand Theft Auto lets us do whatever we want, but defiant NPCs have traditionally taken issue with that. Virtual carjackers have always risked going toe-to-toe with angry drivers, but modern GTA games let you peel out just as your pursuer reaches the door, allowing you to enjoy their moment of misguided but admirable determination as they are dragged mercilessly through the streets.

Real Science Magazine called James' addiction to video games "sexually attractive." He also worked really hard and got really lucky in college and earned some awards for acting, improv and stand-up, but nobody cares about that out here in LA. So... He's starting over fresh, performing when He can. His profile picture features James as Serbian, vampire comic Dorde Mehailo with His anonymous Brother and Uncle at the Nerdmelt Showroom in West Hollywood. In James' spare time, he engages in acting, writing, athletics, hydration, hours of great pondering and generally wishing you'd like him.
