Without doubt, 2012 has been a great year for the gaming industry.
While there was no information released about Microsoft and Sony’s speculated upcoming consoles, the first new generation console, the Wii U, has been released in recent weeks by Nintendo and gamers have been treated to some breathtaking games.
So far, 2013 looks like it will pickup the gaming industry where 2012 will leave it, with a magnitude of games for a variety of consoles already announced. With speculation mounting that at the very least Microsoft and Sony will release information on their next generation consoles, and some very big games coming out over the next year, 2013 should be another great year for gaming.
Over the last few weeks, I have been hard at work scouring websites, press releases, trailers, game events and lists order to compile my list of the 40 best games games (or at of 2013. It should be noted that this list will not be in a ranking order, but in the order of when the games are scheduled for release, but I’m sure you’ll pick that up.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
40. Devil May Cry – January 15th
(Xbox 360, PS3, Windows)
Starting our list off is DmC: Devil May Cry, the fifth game in the Devil May Cry Series and is seen as a reboot of the series, with the game being set in a parallel universe to the setting of prior games. If I’m honest, I’ve never had a chance to play any of the previous installments, but critically the series is superb and incredibly popular, and coupled with the fact that as of yet, with the game just a month away there has been no gameplay trailer, Devil May Cry is one of the most anticipated games of 2013.
39. Dead Space 3 – February 5th
(Xbox 360, PS3, Windows)
With a captivating campaign and an intense, high-octane multi-player, Dead Space 2 was one of the best games of 2011. 2013, marks the release of it’s sequel, aptly named Dead Space 3. While the pre-released reception has been negative, mainly due to what gamers see as a co-operative mode being pushed at them, from what we’ve seen over at WhatCulture, Dead Space 3 looks to be as engaging as its predecessor, and a must buy to start the year off with.
38. Crysis 3 – February 19th
(Xbox 360, PS3, Windows)
Much like Dead Space 2, Crysis 2 was published in 2011 by Ea and received critical acclaim. It’s sequel, Crysis 3, takes place in 2047, 24 years after the events of the first game, with the campaign following the character Prophet. From what EA has treated us with so far, the graphics look amazing and while the controls feel like Call of Duty, the reception so far has been positive, with Crysis 3 set to be one of the biggest games of the next year.
37. Metal Gear Rising – February 19th
(Xbox 360, PS3)
Another much anticipated sequel, its predecessor, Metal Gear Solid 4 was released in 2008 and since then, there hasn’t been too much information regarding the series. However, in the last year or so this has completely changed, with the release of information that Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance was being developed. With such a gap between releases, and the game, unlike its predecessor being released on Xbox 360, Metal Gear Rising has featured on a number of prominent lists for best video games in 2013 and looks set to be a huge hit.

It would be good if we wouldnt have to click next next next next to read through all the 40 games, this 3game/page sucks
Good article, except for one thing. FFXIII will be garbage. Nobody gives a toss about Lightning. I played the original FFXIII and not one of the characters stand out, or were memorable in the slightest. They’ve obviously had all these “sequels” planned from the outset. FFXIII was so bad, yet they’ve still had to run with it.
They’re not FF games and no matter how Motomu Toriyama wants to dress it up and compare it to Roses (personally I would opt for a steaming big pile of dog turd) that won’t change. When he mentioned Facebook I wasn’t surprised, I saw it coming. The developers of SimCity have done something similar and rightly got abused for it. It’s a laughably feeble attempt at increasing profits, but I doubt the target audience of pre-teens, who these games are now aimed at, will mind.
If you have not played a FF game before, please do not start with this. Do not start with any of the recent games. It would be similar to now buying a can of Coke to sample the white powdery extract of the poppy flower it once contained. There’s no point, it’s not there. they took it out years ago and all you’re left with is a sickening, cheap sugar rush imitation that lasts a few minutes but pales in comparison to the real thing. Instead just go straight to your local game shop and ask for a guy named Pablo…..he will sell you a genuine Final Fantasy title.
You mad bro?
Personally never seen why there are so many sequels anyway, its called FINAL fantasy. Not Continuing fantasy. Its like Europe writing a sequel song to The Final Countdown. Impossible I tells ya!!!!!
And whenever I ask for pablo he just gives me a pokemon game and a pat on the rear
You are the exact type of person that shouldn’t exist.
Sounds fair enough – you definitely are a better authority on FF. It’s something that’s never interested me, but I know it’s hugely popular in Japan due to anime being part of their culture.
Agh, please! OP speaks the truth. Classic FF is hardly “animé”, despite Tetsuya Nomura’s intentions. I will deviate, however, and say that XII* is actually an excellent starting place for people new to the series as it is stylistically reminiscent of the SNES games and FFT while not actually being non-action turn-based (which seems to turn a lot of westerners off, especially younger gamers).
SE has a bad habit of continually screwing over western audiences with delayed promises and pushing social-based and (expensive) phone games we just don’t really care about. And almost every FF fan I know hated XIII.
(*yes, it’s SE, but SE hadn’t really ruined it at this point yet. And while XII is before XIII, it came out in 2006. I’ll also say 4HoL was good and reminiscent of NES-era FF.)
Another horrible year for gaming…
Only 3 games on the list I know i will buy. Company of Heroes 2, Sim City and Stick of Truth.
With how disappointing GTA4 was I won’t be buying it until i see what it has to offer. Everything else on the list is your typical rehashed crap
Even games like Beyond: Two Souls?
Sim City is for OS X also.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SimCity_(2013_video_game)
Cheers for the link where it clearly says Microsoft Windows and OS X.
Sorry, that sounded really sarcastic. I meant it genuinely, because I keep hearing people complain about how it’s a Windows-only game, and it’s not.
Thanks for that. I didn’t use wikipedia as a source and I couldn’t find it anywhere else that it was being released on OS X
you forgot about “Tearaway” (from media molecule), “Dragon’s Crown” (vanillaware) and “Pupeteer” (sony japan studio). All of them way better than the same, bland and boring online first person shooters (check them out!). Anyhow good article!
Can’t wait till Rome 2. It looks absolutely amazing
I list is too big I mean the only games i like that are in this list are !#1 grand theft auto V “defintly going to buy”
#2 metal gear ground zero “not sure if on list”
#3 metal gear rising “not made by same person so its a maybe but a strong maybe”
#4 eldier scrolls online “kinda don’t care because I never bought skyrim i like fallout more “
Nah CoD MW is a dead franchise move on fanboy
Gta v on windows? Is that rockstar tipping you off?
And to think we still have no idea what will be launching on PS4 and Xbox 720. And most of whats coming on Wii U for that matter!
No DayZ standalone in the list?
I am disappointed.
thank you for mentioning that
Another one that was forgotten is Tex Murphy: Project Fedora. It was also funded on Kickstarter.
Who writes these??? where is monster hunter tri ultimate? That will be much better than some of the games i just saw
No Heart of the Swarm,no Dragon Age 3?Now that’s a pity :/
Why isn’t the Day Z standalone on the list? It’s a great game that is said to be hacker-proof. What’s not to love about that?
2013 looks terrible….
Screw Lightning, gimme final fantasy versus 13, and no dark souls 2 or ni no kuni?!
Heart of the Swarm is an expansion pack, and was one that I did not feel should be in the list.
Monster Hunter was released in 2011 in Japan – therefore it doesn’t feature on the list.
At the time of writing hardly any information had been released on DayZ and the list only featured a few speculated games, games that I feel are far more anticipated than DayZ.
Dark Souls 2 isn’t featured as again, it has no release date and at the time of writing, there was speculation that it wouldn’t be released in 2013.
Likewise, at the time of writing, there was speculation that Dragon Age 3 would be released in 2014 in order for it to be released with the next-gen consoles.
Hope that answers some of the questions. This article was written in December so please look at it from that perspective – obviously more games will be being announced and receiving release dates that, at the time of writing, were not in the public eye.
Lol, i’m not interested in most of these games. I might not even buy 5/40 of these.
