5 Best Console Redesigns

Ahead of the rumours surrounding Sony revealing a new PS3 Slim console at Gamescon, it got us thinking of other console redesigns we've seen down the years.

Gamescom is just around the corner and talk is rife about a rumoured second PlayStation 3 redesign possibly being revealed at the show. It's not just Sony looking to keep their current hardware fresh with the aid of some plastic surgery; Nintendo are about to launch the 3DS XL, the first of who knows how many revisions to the 3DS. This got me thinking about all the other console redesigns we've seen down the years; I've put together my top 5 and here they are.

5. PS3 Slim

Yes although it may soon be replaced by an even more slender model, the PS3 Slim was a much welcomed revision of Sony's powerhouse system. When the original PS3 was revealed players were left stunned by the visuals on screen but slightly bemused by the system sitting under it. Although some people liked the chunky turtle and its glossy finish, the system lacked the subtle sleek characteristics found in most Sony products. The 2009 Slim model bought with it not only a more refined, understated matt casing, but also improvements like physical buttons, better energy efficiency, and a cooler working temperature.

4. DS Lite

The Nintendo DS saw not one, not two but three designs over its lifespan but it's the first that really stands out. Why? Well because the original DS was so damn ugly, even with dual screens, 3D graphics, and a touch interface, it was hard to look past the handheld's appearance. The Lite didn't offer any major technical upgrades bar a brighter screen, however a variety of colors and even a nice cap to seal up the GBA port, made for a system that was much easier on the eye. The monumental success of the DS owes a lot to the Lite model, with its pretty aesthetic no doubt helping increase its mass appeal.
