5 Destructive Stereotypes About Gamers That Need To Stop

5. It's A Pointless Hobby

Let's start off by getting a little philosophical here: you could argue that any hobby is ultimately pointless in the grand scheme of things. Any pursuit that endeavours to make us forget about our own fragile mortality could be said to be nothing but a mindless distraction that only delays the inevitable. (Anybody else have a sudden hankering to drown some sorrows right now?) Anyway, the point here is that saying something you don't enjoy or understand is nothing but a "pointless hobby" is an empty term because the same could be applied to just about anything. Besides, if it's pointless, why do statistics show that the industry reported profits of $10.5 billion back in 2009? That doesn't sound like a mere hobby that's going to go away any time soon. For comparison, box office figures report a "record breaking" profit of $10.8 billion back in 2012. So if games are a pointless hobby, so is watching movies, and if you believe that, your presence here is both amusing and ironic.
