Oh. That one hurt.

Seeing beautifully woven narratives come to a close, immersing ourselves into fantastical worlds or just shooting the hell out of some random people online all imbue a profound feeling of joy. It’s why we all play video games, right?

Well here's the thing: for all that fun time that CAN be had, there are some instances that make gaming feel like a chore. Hell not even a chore, but an experience akin to letting someone punch you in the face and then pay them for the privilege.

Yeah, we're about to get nasty, because today we're exploring difficulty spikes that, a) came out of nowhere, and b) left you a broken mess in their wake. Thank goodness for save points, eh?

5. Pokémon Gold/Silver - Whitney Gym Battle

The Pokémon games aren’t usually known for their difficulty - they’ tend to be of a more relaxed, broken up by occasionally bashing the everloving s**t out of a friend's most adored pets.

But then came Whitney.

Probably the most unassuming of all the gym leaders in Pokémon Silver, this turned out to be a woman who drinks only p*ss and vinegar and eats only your despair. Her battle was hard - sh*t hard.

First off, let’s talk Normal type pokemon. At this point in the game - unless you bagged yourself a cheeky fighting type , not exactly in strong supply - there was nothing super effective against her lineup. So out the window goes the usual rock-paper-scissors tactic.

Then there's her Miltank. To put it bluntly, I couldn’t sit down for a week. As if the Rollout attack - which increases in power every time - isn't bad enough, the stupid cow drinks its own milk to recover. Tough beef.
