6 Things From The Halo Universe You Probably Didn't Know

6. Sergeant Johnson Is A Spartan?!

First off, a moment of silence for Sergeant Johnson. It’s been twelve years and I still haven’t forgiven that lightbulb Guilty Spark.

Okay, mourning aside, something the games don’t mention outright is that Avery Johnson is a Spartan. Kind of... After showing his skill as a soldier he was handpicked for the ORION Project, a precursor to the Spartan-II project which produced our big green protagonist, Master Chief. Originally, the ORION Project had the aim of creating biologically augmented super soldiers to combat rebels in UNSC controlled space. The augmentations included muscular and respiratory enhancements, as well as mental augmentations that enhance brain function.

However, despite the success of ORION, as exemplified by Sgt. Johnson, many of the participants suffered serious side effects of their augmentations, including tumours and mental instability. In order to maintain the secrecy of the Project, a fictional disease, Boren’s Syndrome was created to explain the symptoms of ORION soldiers.

Johnson explains his survival of the Flood attack in Halo: Combat Evolved as a result of his Boren’s Syndrome having made his nervous system incompatible with the Flood. But in reality, it’s just because he’s a badass super soldier with insane reflexes and physical enhancements.

So, while Johnson’s not quite a Spartan in the way we’re all familiar with, he’s certainly had more than a couple of protein shakes.
