7 Iconic Video Games That Were Created By Accident

1. Conker's Bad Fur Day Wasn't Supposed To Be Adult-Themed

Rare didn't set out to create the most offensive thing on the N64 when it released Conker's Bad Fur Day towards the end of the console's life. It just sort of happened after the cutesy early footage it put out was poorly received,

The GoldenEye developer was originally working on a game about the squirrel titled Twelve Tales: Conker 64, a title that was much more in tune with Nintendo's family-friendly values and the tone of its previous 3D platformers.

When its lush, colourful environments and twee sprites were revealed to eye-rolling and vomiting, Rare took the game back to the drawing board for so long than many speculated it had been cancelled.

The squirrel's solo outing hadn't been canned, it was being reimagined as Conker's Bad Fur Day, a game that turned the protagonist into an alcoholic, cash-obsessed, gun-crazy critter. It was a massive, figurative middle finger to the critics.

Violence, sexual themes and literal toilet humour were the order of the day in Conker's Bad Fur Day, so it came as no surprise when THQ had to distribute it in Europe because Nintendo declined.

Crude is an understatement and it was a far cry from the game Rare set out to make, but Conker's Bad Fur Day is by far the most original platformer on the N64, and maybe even of its generation.
