Modding culture, for those of you that are unfamiliar, is a big thing. Predominantly based in PC gaming, due to being able to seek out root files and changing code, it allows gamers and modders alike to tweak gameplay features.

Whether it's an exploit to have all the best assets of a game available, or leave the grounded confines of a game to explore unheeded, there's a whole wealth of it out there.

But say that's not enough. and you fancy modding out the enemies in favour of wrestling superstars instead. Or guns that fire cars instead of those boring bullets we're all used to.

Whatever it is you're after, chances are someone's made it available in some shape or form. Look at Bethesda, for example, who actively encourage modding to the point of making it available in top titles like Fallout and Skyrim, even allowing console players to get in on the fun.

But like all things, there's some wrong'uns out there too. Give a man free reign to mod something, and chances are they'll produce something rude out of it.

So with that in mind, let's have a look at some of gaming's recent mild, mature and mind-boggling mods that have been produced.

7. DAYZ

Let's start off with something that can only be described as a passion project of a mod.

Whilst there is now a standalone version of DAYZ available, let's remember what it was originally: a modified version of the tactical military shooter, ARMA II.

Now, this isn't the first game to be borne of modding: just look at Counter Strike, which was crafted from the Half-Life engine. But whilst CS was a different kind of game to its "father" game, DAYZ is not wholly removed from its roots.

Such was the popularity of the DAYZ mod, that three years later a full title of the game would be released. Whilst it may have had a slow burn of a start over five years, with Early Access and all, it's a real testament of progress that the mod for a military shooter has gone this far today.
