Going into Uncharted 4 as a fan of the trilogy, we all knew exactly what to expect. Because if there's one thing nobody wants to admit, it's that the gameplay overall is nowhere near as enjoyable as the characters, graphics or story. You play an Uncharted for the cutscenes, not the feel of shooting or gameplay mechanics.

In Uncharted 4's case, it was too much of the same. Yes, the graphics were beyond stunning and gameplay was given a grappling hook/rope swing addition, but 95% of that game was stop n' pop cover systems, platforming within gunfights and ledges breaking every time you attempted to climb them.

Contrast with Horizon, and although it borrows from every major game of the last five years, the sheer variety of what's on offer means you never know what's coming next. Stealthily creeping through jungles in search of valuable prey, losing hours exploring human settlements and using in-depth side-quests and dialogue wheels to understand their motivations, intimidating boss battles that challenge you just enough without being frustrating - all of which takes place in a futuristic world where old and new collide in an immediately interesting way.

Horizon is certainly familiar territory, but it has far more strings to its bow than the seen-it-before repetition that dominated A Thief's End.
