The Lesson: Zombies Aren't A Unique Selling Point

Sony haven't had a major exclusive flop arguably since The Order 1886, but Days Gone could be the title which breaks their winning streak. Announced in 2016, the open-world zombie shooter has had a pretty tough time trying to distinguish itself from the rest of the PS4's own lineup, never mind other huge third-party projects.

The main problem is that, while the developers insist that the story they have cooking up will be the title's main selling point, there's nothing about Days Gone's post-apocalypse that seems original. Though zombie games often get a kicking for being rote, there are ways to make them interesting, with the likes of Dying Light putting the emphasis on parkour or Left 4 Dead prioritising co-op.

Days Gone doesn't seem to be putting a spin on the creatures at all, though, and there's nothing from a story or mechanical perspective that players haven't seen before. The unique selling point is just "there's zombies", which has tanked games in the past like Crackdown 2 and Metal Gear Survive.
