8 Video Games That Turned Out Nothing Like We Were Promised

Some developers will do anything to increase hype for their upcoming releases.

It happens all the time with movies: upon viewing the latest trailer for a picture you've been long awaiting, you glimpse a specific couple of seconds that make you say, "Oh, that's interesting." Six months later, you're in the theatre, mentally ticking off all the cool bits you remember from the trailer as the movie plays out, until... hey, where was that awesome part that you were really looking forward to seeing from the trailer? They took it out? Why did they take it out? Alas, nobody else cares, and you have to settle for checking it out on the DVD deleted scenes, if you're lucky. Still, when that happens it's kind of forgivable, usually because the scene or moment in question is relatively small - it's just a tiny part of what was advertised, so hey, we can forgive and forget. In the gaming world, though, things work differently: companies showcase upcoming games years and years before we actually get to play them, often promising what appear to be the most incredible and revolutionary gaming experiences ever at gaming events like E3. Gamers sit, wide-eyed, wondering if what they're seeing is actually what they're going to get to play one day... And sometimes, yes, developers do deliver on their promises, and we all go home happy. But it isn't always that easy: sometimes the "demo" footage associated with a big release has been designed to manipulate gamers into believing that all their dreams have come true, when - in fact - the final experience is barely comparable. We forgive this occasionally, of course, especially if the game is good (the world seems content to just forget all that original footage from years ago, then). If it turns out bad, though... well, hell hath no fury like a bunch of nerds scorned. So here are 8 video games that - according to early footage and demos and advertising campaigns and things we were explicitly told - turned out almost nothing like we were promised...
