9 2018 Video Games That Wasted Their Biggest Selling Points
9. The "Definitive Battle Royale Experience" - PUBG On Consoles
Remember when PUBG was the name in battle royale circles? H1Z1 might have birthed the genre, but the groundswell of "Holy sh*t, check out this brand new way to play" was unavoidable in 2017.
Brendan Greene's third-person survivalist shooter kept PC fans entertained for most of that year, and come the announcement that it would be landing on Xbox, it seemed Microsoft finally had an exclusive worth snapping up a console to play.
Oh, how wrong we were.
PUBG on Xbox (and now PS4) is a shell of its PC self. Hell, it's a shell of its mobile self, as the latter was helped through development by Chinese titan Tencent, and having been built from the ground up with phones in mind, runs like a dream. On console? It's like you're playing Google Maps Street View before it's loaded.
Sadly, even PUBG Corp themselves are salty about losing all this "genre dominance" to Fortnite, attempting to sue them for getting in on their territory, only to implement a cosmetic microtransaction store that made their own fanbase run the other way, ultimately tarnishing the PUBG brand altogether.
