9 Video Game Heroes Who Turned Evil In The Sequel

2. Big Boss - The Metal Gear Solid Series

Anybody with a half decent knowledge of the knotted mythology of Metal Gear Solid knew Naked Snake would eventually become Big Boss, but the prequel games Snake Eater, Peace Walker and Ground Zeroes let fans see how he changed from idealistic soldier to the ultimate villain of the series.

Kojima doesn’t get much credit for his writing abilities – and to be fair, he does come up with a lot of nonsense – but he does create a real sense of progression in the character through the games, especially after the events of part three. There’s a palpable sense of loss as he gradually loses his faith in the government and becomes a gun for hire.

In a lot of ways Big Boss is a more interesting character than Solid Snake, and even when he makes the leap to the villain he remains sympathetic. The final scene between him and Snake in Guns Of The Patriots should have been way better, however; a CQC man hug was not the way to end things for the character.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
