When most people think of board games they think of things like Monopoly, Risk, and Scrabble. In the right context these are all decent games, but there's a general stigma that compared to video games, board games are fairly dull.

In actuality, there's a huge world of board games beyond the mainstream “classics”, games that cater to all different manners of play styles and tastes, putting you in control of everything from city-wrecking monsters to cosmic aliens and more.

An even stranger notion is the fact that some of the most popular video game franchises in the world have also jumped in on the board game action. Just how exactly do video game mechanics translate to pieces of cardboard and player tokens? In many instances, a lot better than you'd think…

Here are nine video games you didn't know were turned into board games (and how they work).

When you think about it, adapting The Witcher franchise into the realm of board games makes a decent amount of sense. After all, boiled down to its essence, The Witcher is basically just about traversing a sprawling, open world and slaying monsters and looting for treasure. It's a fairly basic concept, and one that translates well to cardboard form.

In The Witcher Adventure Game, two to four players band together in order to travel throughout the world completing quests and downing ferocious beasts in order to earn victory points. You can play Geralt Of Rivia, Triss Merigold, Dandelion, or Yarpen Zigrin. Each character has a unique development deck giving each class its own play style.

What's great about The Witcher Adventure Game is how the quests work. The 'Investigation' deck and the 'Quest' deck work together to offer hints and enigmatic plot points, but they allow for the team playing to build their own different story every time, making the quests feel fluid and natural.
