Boy, do Rockstar know how to work a crowd. One minute they're making literally half a billion dollars off GTA Online, the next a change of their logo's colour heralds the return of Red Dead Redemption.

In a notable twist, it's actually a prequel. Set at the beginning of the 1900s when everything we know as the "old west" was being industrialised and made modern, cowboys, varmints and all things rootin' tootin' suddenly found themselves without an identity.

As such, RDR2's core gameplay loop will revolve around maintaining a camp of bandits and companions whilst evading the law at every turn. Understandably, Rockstar have gone all-out with the game's budget, and everything from the sound of a revolver's chamber to the caw of an overhead crow is exemplary.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is shaping up to be the studio's most impressive work yet, and as a milestone in open world game design (or just game design in general), already we're seeing many game features that will shape the industry forevermore.
