Anthem: 9 Things It Must Learn From Mass Effect Andromeda

9. Fix The 'Bioware Open World Problem'

Mass Effect Andromeda Scanning
Bioware

Bioware have to be the only triple-A developer that don't 'get' the point of an open-world. Instead of designing game mechanics or quests around exploration or traversal, they create gigantic environments with massive expanses of nothing but the most arbitrary of busywork objectives.

"Hey, do you like scanning?" they appear to say. "How about collectibles? Why don't you go find all of them, eh? Go on you little scamp, there's a character with some lost items over there, why don't you return them too? The story is here when you're ready, because actually, you don't need to do any of that other stu- no but please do it, the game is only four hours long if you don't."

We had the same issue in Dragon Age Inquisition; a series of great big 'spaces', filled with... literally just space and collectibles you can 'ping' a radial map to find.

Andromeda's planets felt far more lacklustre as we were meant to be in an entirely new galaxy, but the point remains - and has been echoed by fans hundredfold - don't go down the open-world route if the idea is only there for the sake of being on the back of the box.
