Call Of Duty: Black Ops 3 - 7 Reasons It's The Best One Yet (And 4 It's Not)

Jeff Goldblum, uh, finds a way...

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 is finally in the hands of salivating fans worldwide, and the consensus so far seems to be that it's pretty damn entertaining. Currently sitting at an impressive 84-ish on Metacritic, BO3 is reviewing slightly better than the last few CoD games even if the general series reception has cooled somewhat since the release of 2011's Modern Warfare 3. Several critics believe BO3 to be the best CoD game ever, and in many respects, they're not wrong: the game certainly sees developer Treyarch thinking outside the box in a number of key areas, but of course, there are also those inevitable niggles which crash the party and prevent it from being the true masterpiece it's clearly capable of. A mixture of ground-breaking ideas and mechanics alongside a few unfortunate adherences to series formula, here are 7 reasons why BO3 is the best one yet...and 4 reasons it's not...

Why It's The Best One Yet...

7. The Campaign Is Much More Cinematic

The Call of Duty series has thus far prided itself on largely unfolding its story to the player seamlessly during missions, refusing to break the first-person view but instead dumping exposition on you from whichever character is nearby. Black Ops III changes this in a significant way: in addition to the usual pre-mission cut-scenes, the missions themselves are often interrupted by slickly-produced, cinematic cut-scenes which unload all the pertinent information in a far more interesting way. Rather than just stare at a character model as they talk you to death, the decision to add proper cut-scenes in allows the game to cut to other locations amid the action and basically just be a little more ambitious in how it tells its story. The gamble paid off as, despite the campaign's many misgivings, it was at least presented in a far more engaging way, and hopefully will be adopted by Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games in their next CoD titles.
