After months of speculation, rumours and leaks, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (no, that's not Modern Warfare 4) has finally been announced. The reveal trailer didn't give all that much away, but it has confidently reignited the hype players have for this long-running franchise, with both Activision and developers Infinity Ward promising that the release is going to completely revitalise the series.

And, even from the minute-long reveal, it looks like they might have pulled that off. The trailer was the perfect mix of old and new, showing a couple of familiar faces while putting the focus on a darker, more ambitious version of the sub-franchise, which hasn't seen a main instalment since 2011. While the reveal didn't give all that much away in terms of solid details, the publisher and the design leads inside the studio have been pretty open about what fans can expect going into this year's release.

All in all, it sounds like one of the most tantalising Call of Duty games in years, and a real shift in gear for the franchise and Activision as a publisher. Modern Warfare won't just see overhauled gameplay, but major business shifts in how COD content is delivered to players, potentially acting as the first step into a whole new era for the series.
