Demon Souls and Dark Souls have been received well by both fans and game reviewers, so much so that both titles have won numerous game of the year awards. However, according to Dark Souls creative director Hidetaka Miyazaki we may not see another Dark Souls game because of technical issues in the aforementioned title. In an interview Miyazaki worries fans will not forgive From Software for these technical issues and that a Dark Souls sequel is in doubt because of it.
Here is what Miyazaki had to say about the frame rate issues in Dark Souls:
“Yes, there were technical difficulties. I don’t believe that it’s okay to have them, but realistically speaking, it was quite a large-scale game – even in terms of budget and expectations. So we’re very sorry for the trouble we’ve caused by our processing errors and bugs from Japan. It was a title that we haven’t really experienced in all aspects, so there were areas where we felt our technical side couldn’t keep up with the game’s scope, like an increasingly growing ache. I didn’t mind the growing pains. We accept the game as it is, and that it’s just a part of the learning curve.”
Miyazaki then went on to talk about a sequel to Dark Souls:
“We don’t even know if we’ll have another chance. We have the confidence that we can improve from our mistakes this time and create an even better Dark world, but we don’t know if the users will forgive us for the mistakes, so I cannot give an exact answer.”
I don’t know where this is coming from, because I have heard almost nobody complain about issues in Dark Souls. Compared to all the issues people are having in Skyrim, these frame rate issues in Dark Souls are just a drop in the bucket. Have any of you who have played Dark Souls had any major issues with the game because I haven’t heard about these problems before? Unless there is a huge group of people angry at From Software for issues in Dark Souls I don’t know about, there is no way that these few technical hiccups should prevent a Dark Souls sequel from being made.

Just a few frame-rate issues, but that’s a small price to pay for one of the greatest games I’ve ever played (and I’ve been playing video games for 25 years.)
That is what I thought nothing big, I just don’t get why they wouldn’t make a sequel based on technical issues that no one is complaining about. If they were that bad there wouldn’t be a petition to get the game on the PC.
Really anticipating another souls game. Just wishing to have the ability to play with friends from the beginning. Glade that they fixed that. Now my friend and I have dropped MW3 a game will love to play Dark Souls again. We need a new one now though.
Hosam, you can play with your friends. it’s a little tricky, but very fun. you need to check out the Wiki for more details, but if you and your friend(s) are in the Warriors of Sunlight covenant you can summon each other quite easily. The first time you play together might take a few minutes to see the summon sign, but after that….
Dear Sir Hidetaka Miyazaki.
The only problem I have with Demon’s Souls and Dark Soul is that I cannot play anything else. All other games look terrible. I wish I have never played your games because I cannot enjoy anything else after them. And now your are telling there is no 100% guarantee for sequel. I am doomed !!!
I got mentally ill playing both games. I can not complain one bit about the issues in Dark Souls. It was so immersive that I fear for my health should the DLC some out soon. I have to play it. If Mr. Miyazaki has the ability to create these insanely fun and sadistic games then turn off the spigot for a 3rd even darker title then we are at a great loss. Nothing else compares to the rush of playing these two games. I hope Mr. Miyazaki continues to touch the demon inside of him. Domo Arigato!
What on earth is he talking about?! Sure there were a few technical issues with framerate and notably the online lag kinda takes serious PVP out of the question, but Dark Souls is still easily one of the greatest games I’ve ever played! Definitely in my top five.
Miyazaki-san, you must make us another Souls game please! [and nerf DWGR so that it only works for <25% equip burden]
And thanks for such an incredible game Sir.
On PS3 (at least for me) i’ve experienced next to none framerate problems.. in fact I remember only once and i’ve played it long enough to platinum it and coplete the story more than half a dozen times. That said even if a sequel were aflicted with the same issues skyrim had i’d still happily hand over my cash for it.
From Software would be crazy not to milk the “Souls” universe.
One thing i’d absolutely love in a sequel would be an arena type mode. Offline you fight a variety of enemies/ncp’s untill you face the boss demon whose souls you can either consume or use to unlock pvp mode. Leaderboards etc etc….. just thought i’d get the idea out there on the offchance :P
Best game I’ve played after 22 years of gaming. Also as a game maker.. the bugs and framerate are negligible. Artists were not made for PR!
in fact I don’t think I’ve even had any bugs after 140 hours play…
I am a fan for life. I enjoyed Demon Souls and now I’m endlessly loving Dark Souls. What a deep and beautiful game. I truly hope From Software continues this series :-D I have zero complaints about this game or any technical issues. All games suffer from hiccups and as fans, I think we understand this. Bring on the next one!
Only hiccups I saw was top of the long ladder in darkroot basin. Had it there almost every time I was there. But not serious and not a problem at all really. I HAVEN’T EVEN HEARD THAT ANYONE was complaining about tech issues with DS???
That arena idea is brilliant, and have a buy in of souls for pvp
Blighttown suffers from FR issues. I’ve seen it elsewhere also, like in the room below the gargoyles that is full of hollows. Online, I have been back-stabbed by people standing in front of me, 10 feet away, etc. Still, not a deal breaker; I come back for more pretty much every day. Who am I kidding? I haven’t missed a day in a month. Bring on the sequel(s)!
As soon as I can preorder the sequel I will do, im sure from well make a sequel as dark souls has sold of 1.5 Million copies which is very successful for a game of this type. Although I am sure it again will not be direct sequel but a spritually successor, such Dark Souls is to Demon’s Souls.
dark souls needs a sequel. it is the greatest thing to happen to gaming since monster hunter (which needs more western releases on non-nintendo platforms). dark souls has honestly damaged my mental health, raised my reflexes to superhuman paranoid levels and made me hate every other game in existence (excluding monster hunter) simply because they are unbearably bad in comparison. give me a sequel now, i need it to survive as a gamer, nothing will ever be able to give me anywhere near the amount of enjoyment i got from dark souls. also, a PvP arena would be amazing. and being able to 1: co-op with friends more easily and 2: co-op for longer, not just until the end of the area.
Matt have you ever played the game. I love it, but the multi-player is horrible. I have sat there for over 1 hour waiting for my 2 friends signs to come up and they never did. I can get invaded easily but summoning is impossible. How hard is it to put a little script in the game to look and see if your friends are online and be able to summon them instantly? I have very little programming experience and I could write it for them.
