Dead Island 2 Development Team Sacked?!

Deep Silver announcement confirms parting of ways.

In a strange update, Dead Island publisher Deep Silver have sent out news that they have parted ways with German development team Yager midway through production on the sequel. The message was short and sweet - though presumably not for the ousted developers:
"With Dead Island 2, Deep Silver has always been dedicated to delivering the sequel that Dead Island fans deserve. After careful consideration, today we announce the decision to part ways with development partner Yager. We will continue working towards bringing our vision of Dead Island 2 to life, and we will share further information at a later stage."
Yager had previously worked on Spec Ops: The Line and replaced original Dead Island team Techland who themselves bailed on the sequel to focus on developing Dying Light with Warner Bros. They won the contract after pitching to Deep Silver in 2012, and there were suggestions back in April that all wasn't well on the project, when the release was pushed back to an unspecified 2016 date with missed objectives to build on the original cited as the reason. At the time Deep Silver said the following:
"Right now we are focusing purely on development, and we will have more info to share at a later stage. We know that our fans will be disappointed by this news, but by giving Dead Island 2 more time we are confident that everyone will get a better game to play as a result."
So what does that mean for the game? Is there any chance it's going to hit even a 2016 release now that it presumably has to be built up from the ground again? What could possibly have been so bad that Deep Silver have taken such drastic action? Presumably there will be more to the tale than this.
