Devil May Cry: Demo Impressions

2. Presentation

There is really only one thing you need to know about DmC in the visual department. It looks incredible. Fans might complain that Ninja Theory have butchered a classic character such as Dante but to be honest, even as a hardcore fan, I forgot about our original white-haired hero after five minutes. The graphics are beautiful, the setting is unique and the level design is really impressive. But it's the animations that are most impressive. There is no hiccups when either platforming or engaging in action heavy combat. Slashing an enemy into the air, pulling Dante up to him and hitting a ten strike combo before finishing him off with a dual pistol blast still looks as cool as ever. The enemies on screen all look the same but there is a wide range of different types so it's not that noticeable. I'm not crazy about the camera though. Similar to the auto lock-on system, it just seems a little off. It's a small issue but one that's worth noting. Saying that, I remember it took me ages to get used to the new camera in Resident Evil 4 and we all know how good that game was. Limbo looks amazing. The gothic architecture provides a stunning contrast against the demonic skyline of purple, red and blue. As for Dante himself, he's still a cocky bad-ass with killer one liners. His conversation at the end of the demo with the foul mouthed slug boss is hilarious as they engage in what I could only describe as the demonic equivalent of a Yo' Momma slagging match.
