The pressure was certainly on Sony after it became increasingly apparent that most of the prior E3 conferences were, honestly, a bit on the soft side (if not flat-out disappointing).
Megaton reveals were in frustratingly short supply from EA, Microsoft, Bethesda, Square Enix and Ubisoft, and with countless expected games pulling no-shows, Sony could've decisively "won" E3 just by dropping even some pretty mediocre teasers for these titles.
As it turned out, Sony's show was also a bit of a mixed bag itself. Though the focus on four main tentpole games made a lot of sense, like last year's show it lacked the oomph of 2015 and 2016, instead settling for being a pretty standard, shock-free E3 presentation.
Granted, it's an awkward time in game development as this generation begins to wind down and both Sony and Microsoft start prepping their next-gen consoles, but jaw-dropping announcements have nevertheless been in short supply across the board at this year's E3. Your move, Nintendo...
