No team has matched the ten league championships that Les Verts have won and for thirteen years they were the among the best teams in Europe. In 1961-62 Saint Etienne were relegated to the second division. That shock spurred them on to an instant promotion and the next season they won the Ligue 1 championship. Between 1964 and 1977 they won eight championships, including four-in-a-row towards the end of the 60s. On top of that they won five Coupe de Frances and three Trophee des Champions. The only trophy they didnt lift was the European Cup. In 1976 they made the final and played Bayern Munich at Hampden Park. Unfortunately, a single goal from Franz Roth was enough to sink the French side. Saint Etienne have never enjoyed quite as much success since. While they currently sit in Ligue 1 they havent won the championship since 1981. They have been dogged by financial issues and have bounced between the second and first division. Why not take Saint Etienne back to French league dominance? They once boasted players like Michel Platini so why not develop the next wonderkid? Do what that famous team could not and win the Champions League.
