Sorry God of War 3, you just can’t beat the second game.
This is the game that cemented the God of War franchise as one of Sony’s true greats. Considering how many games there are on the PS2, the fact that so many people think of this as one of the best should make its position here obvious.
One of the things that really put God of War 2 above the rest is the story. God of War has never really focused on the narrative, but the sequel delivered some genuinely great stakes, and also revealed the fact that Zeus was Kratos’ father.
Of course, the real reason everyone thinks God of War 2 is the best comes from gameplay improvements. It follows much the same formula as the original, but improves pretty much every aspect of it in some way.
Put simply, God of War 2 perfected the formula and delivered the best adventure in the series, with the best plot to boot. It’s going to be hard for the newest game to top this.
