Nearly eight months after Grand Theft Auto V’s debut trailer was first released and almost broke the internet with excitement, no new details whatsoever have come out from the tightly lipped Rockstar. Only rabid speculations from fans and usually false news leaks from people claiming they work or have worked at Rockstar, have unearthed in the months since.
Is this a type of sneaky advertising? A purposeful strategy from Rockstar to get people talking about the game? If it is, by gum has it worked. Previous GTAs and other Rockstar games, usually have had multiple trailers out by now, each giving more details on the lead protagonist and a vague idea of what the game will focus on, setting etc.
Each GTA has pushed itself further and further on improving graphics, adding more gameplay mechanics, interesting storylines and achieving a more immersive, living, breathing world. But the major difference between all GTAs is the generation of console they have come out on and the graphics they present.
GTA 1 and expansions were of the same family of graphics. GTA 2 had a different sort of lighting effect, which made it seem like a highly different game. GTA III era games (GTA Vice City, GTA San Andreas, GTA Liberty City Stories and GTA Vice City Stories) were of the same ‘family’ of games with linked characters between games and generally the same sort of PS2, XBOX, PSP and PC graphics. GTA IV seemed so amazing to GTA fans because of the supreme graphical advancements including Rockstar’s own RAGE (Rockstar Advanced Game Engine) and convincing ragdoll physics. The storyline was engaging and the characters unique, though a good percentage of players want to kill Roman and ram his phone down his throat, “Niko, you want to go get a bite to eat?”
So, in order for GTA V to be loved the most by GTA fans and gain new ones, radical improvements need to be made. Here are my top 10 for what Rockstar need to improve to make GTA V live up to our expectations….

Of all the articles out there, stating what needs and doesn’t need to be done to GTA V, this has to be my favourite. Agree with just about everything said.
Thank-you a positive comment. You are the best Connor.
Probably the best article I have read because none of the improvements are impossible they are extremely possible. And I like that too many websites make rediculous requests. One thing I do have to say, LA Noire and Max Payne 3 only had one disc on the PS3 but multiple on the 360. Mainly because of the blu-ray on PS3 so multiple discs isnt a put off
Thanks for saying. I wasn’t to sure about the PS3.
you forgot the part where ‘i doubt gta v will be better than gta 3′. MOST IMPORTANT PART. but awesome article and your probably right :)
Very Funny.
your right about everything
Adding to your list:
Underwater Diving
Sea life
Hang gliding
Jet pack
Parachuting
Surfing
cargo truck or train riding (inside the cargo box!) or hanging from outside.
Be able to play beach volleyball or soccer.
Bring back RC toys that could enter hard to reach areas…
Hand thrown (rope with steel hook) Grappling hook, to reach places that can only be reached using it (a plus for exploration)
Able to make trip wire to cross over chasms
ability to sit or lay down anywhere on the floor alone or with friends
Hope gang recruiting is back (like in SA where they follow you wherever you go. I used to love to recruit 8 beach babes, then find a bikini line bus and go for a fun ride with them, taking them to other beaches and places they shouldn’t be, like the city… lol
While I’m at it, ability to date any girl and have a “turn jealousy off” cheat. :D
Good ideas.
Sleep Mode was available in the original GTA IV and one hour in-game is 2 minutes not one.
Sorry I didn’t use sleep mode until I played The Episodes and I meant 2 minutes.
I concur with you, lad! Im sublimely awaiting the release of GTA V….by the break of dawn…i dart to my lap, desk or smartphone to check out new leads on the game…
What do you reckon the chances are of Gamescon providing substantial information regarding GTA V?
I have to be honest, as I read along, I just knew you were gonna say driving. It’s one of the biggest complaints I see. I have to say that it’s the most annoying complaint. Driving in GTA IV was incredible. No other competitor in the category did it better or even anywhere near as good as R*.
Some good items on the list, but making this too much like “The Sims” with purchasable house decorations, at price pay-and-spray, and more TV shows is a little too much and seems to take up more room on the disk than needed. Pay-and-Spray’s aren’t supposed to be 5 star auto shops, they are ramshackle quicky places to lose the cops. To me it seems they should focus development elsewhere besides the TV stations. Also, i’d rather have a wide variety of different cars etc. than limiting the number of cars due to having numerous models years of the same model.
fake and gay
Max Payne 3 and L.A. Noire were not multiple disks on PS3, so that point is only partially valid. other than that, some good points
Exallent pionts in this artical.
Some excellent points in the article. I don’t care about adding more TV episodes, though…. I’m not buying GTA to “watch TV”
Thank-you, fair enough about TV episodes. I just put it in there because many people complained about repetitiveness.
What? I haven’t checked but if you click your next page, and the next and so forth they count as one page viewed, so your potential “10 reasons” gives you, if one person viewed EACH page would give you 10 views per 1 viewer. So 1 million hits will be only for you 100,000 hits.
Its like Sony claiming to have 1 million PSN sign ups, but in reality, because there are multiple regions with different content, a lot of people have taken multiple accounts to get content, so 1 person might have 3 PSN accounts, US, UK, US, CHINA, Japan(take your pick)and add them up.
So in the end, everyone is full of sh!t.
You actually bothered to share your views on PSN on this article. You are wasting peoples time. This happens to be my favourite piece on GTA V and I don’t need you filling it with comments on irrelevant issues about Sony.
Hey Christopher,
It seems like 80% of your suggestions are surface level. In other words, they could have all been done inside of the confines of GTAIV. Why not give a top 10 list that challenges them? Like you said, they are a superior game company.
You added “Graphics” to the list; which is a large foundational element! Why not suggest improved “Physics” and “Destructible Environments”? These additions would have a true impact on the way we play the game. Also, they are available from 3rd party developers through licensing agreements (similar to how R* employed Euphoria’s Natural Motion system for the realistic character model physics in IV).
I agree with “Scale”, and I agree with “Animals” considering the wilderness areas that will be included.
How about mission variety? More random encounters? And improved AI that allows for essentially creating your own missions… in other words, holding people up in a bank could kick off a robbery, but completely at random – not as part of a mission. Or… at a red light, the person next to you is revving their engine to kick off a random street race. Complete with cops of course, if they happen to see you. How about environmental awareness? One of the biggest weaknesses of GTA IV was the magical ability for civilians/cops to know you are committing a crime even when no one sees it. Red Dead’s witness system should* fix this if applied properly and assuming it leverages true line of sight.
Just some thoughts to really dig down and change the actual function of the game itself. Deepen the gameplay. Provide mission-like situations, at random. Purchasable items, houses, cars, activities w/ friends, girlfriends, etc… all of this stuff could be DLC at $5 or $10 a pop.
R* will never offer a “Destructible Environment Add-on” as DLC!
Great ideas Bob C. Destructible environments is a good idea and I am glad to see others like “animals” as an idea.
I feel like none of this stuff could happen in the game until a new system comes out, because then they can use larger disc sizes to make their games. This way you could have a massive game on just one disc. (By the way, there are dildos in gta 4. If you go into a sex shop, and press the left bumper in front of one, it picks it up, and you can throw it at people.)
If carlsberg done internet articles, this would be it. Spot on.
I would like to see both realism and fun added to GTA. Maybe not V but next gen consoles can handle all the data to make: seasons (spring would bring colorful flowers that blossom, summer would bring NPCs that wear shorts, sandals, bikinis etc, fall would obviously bring the changing colors of leaves, winter would bring cold weather and maybe even snow depending on the city, but mountains would have snow, they could even do seasonal activities like snowboarding) I would love to see what I like to call “realistic ballistics” which means, for what ever gun we have, it should do a certain amount of physical damage for example; 9mm pistol should leave bullet holes throughtout the body, a shotgun (if close enough) would blow arms and legs off, and tear faces off NPCs, assault rifles could potentially dismember an arm if shot multiple times in the same area, and .50 cal sniper rifles and machine guns would obliterate the target, and different types of damage as well. I also though that having the same model gun but with different calibers should be present, again for example, the combat pistol (in this case the D eagle) we should be able to buy the .357 model easily as where the .44 would probably have to be taken from some government agent (by taken I mean taken after killing the bastard) and the .50 AE should be a hard to find rare gun that can only be unlocked as you progress through the story, this could be applied to multiple weapons. I would like to see a change up in the weapons roster, I love the AUG and would love to see it in GTA soon, with real AUG sounds. Same goes for all weapons. This would be a list of weapons id like to see change up the bland weapon list we pretty much get in all GTA games:
Assault rifles: AUG, HK 417, INSAS, Stoner 63A, G36.
Pistols (auto, tri burst and semi): Glock 18C, desert eagle, M1911, Colt Python, PPK, Beretta M93R.
SMG: P90, MP5K, Uzi pro, Beretta MP12S, Chang Feng, Criss super V.
Sniper rifles: DSR 50, Barrett M95, WA2000, PSG-1, M40A1.
Shotguns: Spas 15, Saiga 12, Jackhammer, Serbu super shorty, Mag-7, UTS 15, Streetsweeper, Neostead.
LMG/HMG: M60, M134 (MINIGUN!!!!!) M249 SAW.
Explosive weapons: remote C4, smoke/flash/remote/fuse type frag grenade, landmine, RPG 18, stinger guided missile launcher, single shot grenade launcher, 6 round revolving cylinder grenade launcher, MK. 27 grenade machine gun (having to carry it like MINIGUN from past games).
Misc/fun/crazy weapons: flamethrower, Molotov, Katana, screwdriver, chainsaw, axe, nail gun, kitchen knife, SOG combat knife, hammer, sledge hammer, 9 iron, baseball bat/spiked bat, night stick, dildo (hahaha), any funny but deadly misc weapons or items that can be weirded and used as weapons that can be chosen by R*.
I would also love to see some slight gun mod ability but not over doing it (this isn’t CoD) so things like silencers, extended mags, scopes (only for certain guns) compensators (only for pistols, gives less recoil) lasers, grips, with each attachment helping the weapon out somehow. The reloading animations should be complete, like hearing the mag hit the floor, mags that actually fall off the gun when reloading, realistic cocking (hehe) actual bolt movement, pump movement and rocket reloading. I don’t think gun camo is that important but that’s just me. What made me fall in love with GTA SA was the mod shops for cars. It should be expanded to where every type of car has a garage with special mods for example, trucks getting off road/low profile tires, lift/drop, and wheels we would like to see on trucks, and other things as well, and then we can have imports with turbo kits, better handling suspension, wide/subtle aero, race wheels, high performance tires, engine mods and exhaust as well as nitrous (which would most likely be a universal mod, then have a garage for muscle cars and all the right mods that go with those cars as well as a euro mod garage and a bike shop, and then have the gereral mod shops that add the same things to every car. With this alone the game will never get old. There should be WAY more variety in side missions. R* can really dig deep to find out what they can add that we’ve never experienced in a GTA game. Bring back the classics like the RC rampage, rampage itself was totally badass, I really had fun with the L.C. Cage fighter, but add a more fluid and less tacky fighting action, with alot of different punches or learning different styles like GTA SA. Gang wars need to make a come back, taking over turf was so much fun adding the HD graphics and ragdoll physics should be the cherry on top for an unforgettable game. I hope we can also walk into police stations and hospitals to make a massacre happen, haha good times. And I remember reading a great idea that after we get a certain amount of stars, when the news heli starts following us, it should record our actions in a different camera angle and we could watch our rampage on TV the next day on the news, I thought that was brilliant. The environment should be more accessible with more latters in areas that would make sense, we can try to run from the police by jumping from rooftop to rooftop instead of just running into the street and stealing the closest car we find. I remember when I read an article about neat little things you can do in GTA IV when it had just come out, it talked about the mad car theft victim that when timed right would hang on to the door handle if you took off in the right moment, R* should look for more fun little things like this to implement in the game, like jumping onto a car from a high building to attempt an epic suicide that could then be seen again the next day in the news (pretty awesome right?) there also plenty of things that are easily applied to a game since its been done before like 18 wheelers, trailer included, but also having a fuel tanker trailer so we can drive it in a crowded area, blow up the sucker and watch a huge explostion while dozens of ragdoll NPCs fly through the air, then quickly take out our shotguns and have a friendly game of corporeal skeet shooting. I wanted to fully explain the things I wanna see in a GTA game in the future that weren’t already acknowaged by R*, so I hope you guys want to see this in the next GTA and tell me what you think of my ideas, and a big sorry for writing so damn much haha.
Yes you certainly did write a lot. I totally agree with all of that.
I love the fact that ‘Flunk Bird’ has written ‘fake and gay’ as this article isn’t what IS going to happen it’s Christopher’s take on what should be improved, which by the way I agree with! :D
Thank you.
Flunk Bird is obviously an idiot.
Good article, I’m not sure if anyone had brought this up before, I haven’t heard any comments about it on other lists or blogs but my favorite gta was vice city. Sure I loved the others as well but what I liked most about gta vc was the ability to build an empire! Tommy started from scratch and had the ego and ambition to climb to the top. He also became very rich and was able to acquire multiple realestate aswell as businesses. Gta sa was excellent but I wanted to acquire more, a tacky house on the hill and a part ownership of a casino didn’t cut it. Gta iv he started as a bum for hire and ended up a bum for hire. Also the lack of garage space and ability to collect cars was lost. I agree with your comment about the 80s vibe and open space of vc as well.
Thanks. I enjoyed working my way up from the top too.
GTA 5 One of the best game ever made. Rockstar North is a British video game developer based in Edinburgh, Scotland, best known for creating the Grand Theft Auto. Check it at Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. You sir miller the famous beer : )
No. 5, Scale, is the biggest point for me here. I would add ‘diversity’ to it as well. While there will only be one major city in GTAV the scope for topographical diversity in a re-imagined California is vast. from the trailer I’m already excited to see the various terrains that will be available and that is one of the things that makes San Andreas my favourite game in the franchise. I hope Rockstar do include several ‘substantial’ towns (by which I mean containing missions, stores and discoverables as opposed to size).
The top of my personal list of things I wish to see in the next GTA would be more discoverable missions that are separate from the main campaign. These sorts of mission (like the blue man missions of GTAIV) could reasonably be included in a larger amount than GTAIV and without detracting from the main story. They offer a reward for player exploration and increase the sense that the player is occupying a world that doesn’t revolve around them.
I also agree with more purchasable items. There were considerably less purchasable items in GTAIV compared to GTA SA which reduced my motivation to earn money. With so little to do with it I felt that the amount of money I was earning in GTAIV was little more than a tallying score.
Do you think that GTA was better on PC or Xbox?
Well the older ones I actually find to be better on PS2 and the more recent ones PC.
They should make it like RDR. You shoot both legs and they kneel down. And ZOMBIES!!!
