It appears that at WhatCulture towers, no matter how much we wish for it, we can’t make GTA V happen now. Which is quite a good thing as there is, as of yet, no contingency plans for the fact everyone will explode with excitement and not be able to contribute for several decades of gameplay.
However, not one to look blind eyed in to the future at the prospect of GTA 5, I have opted for an evening of looking wistfully back on GTA of old. Namely San Andreas and the city of Los Santos; where GTA 5 is returning to and one rich in GTA legacy which we don’t want to see forgotten.
The fact GTA has moved on two generations since we last flew through the Los Santos skyline shouldn’t hinder the potential to meet and greet our old favourites from the last time we graced these shores.
Here are 5 of the best characters (who are still alive) that we wouldn’t mind seeing in GTA 5; even if it is just for a quick hello and a cup of tea.
5. Carl ‘CJ’ Johnson
San Andreas’ protagonist and, quite easily, the best GTA main character created so far.
A character we could craft to effectively any image we desired, skinny or fat, ripped or lean, blonde hair or green hair, clothes or just boxers; it was all our oyster.
More so than just the customisation though, CJ was an emotionally driven, funny and completely bad-ass throughout us taking him to the top of gang power and influence throughout San Andreas.
After spending nigh on 80 hours of gameplay to get CJ to the stage of success he was at when the games credits rolled on to the screen; it is owed to us to see how well his business empire lasted in the world of San Andreas.
How He Could Feature:
Either in passing, like ‘Johnson Enterprises’, or him voicing an advert for some new business venture on the radio or TV.
Or the goal of this game could be our main character trying to bring down his stranglehold on Los Santos which he has dominated for two decades; the ending could involve a choice of whether you kill him or not, one thing certain to tear at the hearts of all die hard GTA fans.

I know he’s not exactly a character you meet, but I’m hoping for Lazlow to feature on the radio once more. By far the standout character in the entire series for me.
Of course he will, he’s been in every gta as a radio host. And i don’t think rockstar would just give himm away.
The truth was not part of the Epsilon program, who used the saying Kifflom, some radio stations state who the leader is, Chris Fromage. Though would be good see all these characters.
Granted, but 20 years has passed since the story of San Andreas. Plenty of time for The Truth to surge to prominence in a conspirative; anti government cult.
This article writer is a noob, cj is dead. The whole point of a new gta 20 years later is for everything to be shiney new.
CJ isn’t dead. Who’s the noob now?
Not as main characters necessarily, it would just be nice to give some consistency between the games and have them appear. I find it difficult to believe that the gang power Grove Street had at the end of San Andreas, combined with their business interests and wealth, would be erased from memory.
GTA 4 got around the whole Liberty City thing by highlighting how the nature of crime changed and the people coming in off the boat were of different nationalities, different cultural backgrounds so it all became different.
Unless Los Santos had a similar power shift I don’t see why these people shouldn’t appear.
Also this is just a poster billboard featured in GTA 4:

Something like that but with a little bit more built upon would be a cool addition.
Sadly, CJ is dead. It is confirmed in gta 4 ester egg that all protagonists from 3rd era are dead.
San Fierro and Las Venturas to appear in trailer #2 on the final day of games com 2012 to blow everybodys mind!
CJ and the grove street families, shown in a clip from the trailer owning 50% of the casinos in Las Venturas and tensions growing with the italians! #dreamer
Just incase anyone was getting their hopes up that any of these characters actually would return, Rockstar has been very clear that the games from the previous gen and the current gen have no relationship, except for the radio, brand names, cars, and locations. Also, the Truth would never become head of the Epsilon Cult, 5 minutes on their website or listening to their commercials in SA will reveal that it’s a massive scam.
I want to see sweet more than the truth maybe he could be in a mission with cj.
At least one person understands this. Thank you sir!
Seriously, how many times must it be explained that GTA IV and V take place in a separate continuity than the PS2 era games? How many times? Rockstar has even flat-out confirmed this and yet people still expect Tommy and CJ to return. I know this will fall on deaf ears, but THIS IS NOT THE SAME LOS SANTOS FROM GTA: SAN ANDREAS!!! IT’S A REINVENTED LOS SANTOS JUST LIKE GTA IV’S REINVENTED LIBERTY CITY!!! CJ AND TOMMY VERCETTI DO NOT EXIST IN THIS TIMELINE!!!
“Cris is a thesis, not an antithesis, and as the literature explains, a true thesis exists equally in all paradigms,” then added “Hope that’s cleared that up.” While it doesn’t confirm the presence of Cris Formage in GTA 5, it does seem to acknowledge the character in the wider GTA universe, which is significant – Rockstar has previously denied any crossover between the last-gen GTA games (GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas) with the current-gen titles, GTA 4 and the upcoming GTA 5. It may be a possibility of reoccurring characters
Very true, Mr Salter. However, there’s no reason these characters couldn’t be “reinvented” as well as the city. Clearly a lot of people have fond memories of these characters and perhaps Rockstar will chuck in a few references at the very least (well, more then some graffiti).
Saying that though, to be honest I couldn’t care less if they reappear or not, while it would be nice to see Tommy and co again, I’m not about to start boycotting Rockstar over it or telling them how to make their games.
It’s going to be a great game and I’m very eager to play it!
I like all of these. Especially, Toreno and CJ. Toreno is who I thought the main character was when I first saw the preview. The new guy could definitely be linked to Toreno. I could even see us killing CJ but Toreno seemed to have a fondness for him.
Would that be a first for GTA? Killing a playable character from another game?
Personally, I was dissipointed, I could give a rats ass about cj, I wanna see a a gta that focuses on tore no in his early days, they say he’s a mysterious triple agent so why not make ” gta international that puts him in San Andreas, liberty city, and vice city. PS. Two favorite characters of gta are toreno and lance Vance from the vice city saga
Just to add, i thnk we shud c mike torino, and cj, after da game is in SA SO I THNK WE SHUD also c sweet, if nt da game is gng to b very disapoint. At least there must b 1 SA character
