It's not every day you get the opportunity to play almost every single upcoming video game that'll drop between now and halfway through 2019, but Birmingham's EGX convention is an annual showcase of what's to come; a raucously fun blur of everything from Spyro Reignited Trilogy to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Thankfully, the vast majority of everything present was in great shape. Smash Bros. Ultimate feels like the culmination of almost 20 years' worth of mechanical iteration, low-key spiritual sequels like GRIP aim to deliver the delights of PS1 gem Rollcage to a new generation, and Life is Strange 2 is fast-becoming a narrative behemoth on the level of The Last of Us and Telltale's The Walking Dead.

In terms of how the convention is laid out, massive triple-As take up the majority of the gaping NEC trade centre. Indies are tucked away up top for those willing to seek out the next wave of innovative ideas, whilst Sony and Nintendo's booming display stands command you to check out the likes of Spider-Man and Pokémon.
