InFamous Second Son: Was Choosing Good A Bad Decision?

Second-Son-LogoSPOILER ALERT: This article contains spoilers of both InFamous 2 endings and details regarding InFamous Second Son. When Second Son was revealed earlier this year, it wasn't just the spirits of InFamous fans, and Playstation fans, that it raised. With InFamous 2 sporting two (very different) endings, it also raised a very interesting, very crucial question. Where does Second Son fit into the InFamous universe? Is it a prequel? Would one of the two ending be considered as canon? Or would the developers venture down a new path entirely? Well, in a recent batch of juicy details, we got our answer. It all made for some exciting reading, as we learnt more regarding the game's new protagonist, Delsin Rowe, the game's new setting and the new superpowers we will be wielding. But amongst it all, lay the answer to that burning question. Second Son's placement in the InFamous universe. Sucker Punch revealed that the Hero ending of InFamous 2 is the official canon to Second Son, with this game taking place seven years after InFamous 2. According to Sucker Punch, they observed PSN trophy data to see what choice the players made the most and, as it turns out, 78% of people managed to suppress their dark side and showed no hesitation in making the ultimate sacrifice for greater good of humanity... until they opened up a new save file and went to town on the civilians, that is. So, our curiosity has been satisfied, but is that the only thing that has been satisfied? If you recall, the hero ending resulted in the death of Cole McGrath (a dark day for us all) and the death of every conduit on the planet, active or not. Well... it did then. Apparently, the blast wasn't as effective as first thought and some weaker conduits survived (despite the fact we were clearly shown conduits die as far as Egypt, making American survivors seem quite unlikely). What's more, it is said that all conduits are now considered to be "bio-terrorists" and that "The Patron Saint of New Marais" is remembered by the world as a villain. Does this make the decision just a little bit redundant? Why did Cole have to die in vain? If you're wondering, I chose evil and whereas I'm looking at this decision objectively, personally, I am unsure about the use of the hero ending. I thought the evil ending held way more possibilities. Why couldn't Delsin have taken it upon himself to kill the now beast infused Cole? Why couldn't we have controlled Cole as he leads his conduit army on a quest for global domination? Maybe Cole is starting to question his decision, giving the karma system a chance to return. Speaking of the karma system, don't panic! Just because the hero ending was chosen, this doesn't mean we are stuck being a hero. Delsin can be as morally fickle as you want him to be. Hero ending or not, I do think that InFamous Second Son will be a great game, and the concept that has spawned from the hero ending (a government organisation forged to hunt down conduits like animals because people are afraid of them) is interesting to say the least. Plus, with electricity powers being swapped out for smoke, and the much larger playground of Seattle to liberate or destroy, InFamous is only going to benefit from the next-gen jump.. So, I have mulled over the question myself and now, I pass it onto you. In a game based around the idea of choices, did Sucker Punch make the wrong one? Are you happy with this choice? Where would you have placed Second Son? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
