LEGO Dimensions Year 2: 8 Things We Learned About Sonic, Harry Potter, Adventure Time & More

Lego’s been a video game powerhouse for over a decade, selling over 100 million games across its various series. Just let that sink in: the iconic foot-jabbing blocks are now a gaming series with equal sales to FIFA and considerably more than icons like Sonic and Halo.

It’s unclear how much of that number is made up by Lego Dimensions, the company’s take on the toys-to-games craze kickstarted by Skylanders and popularised by Ninentdo’s Amiibo and Disney Infinity, but you can bet it hasn't hurt; dropped last year, it brought together an amazing set of characters, from superheroes to The Simpsons, that made just Star Wars and Marvel seem pithy.

Things aren't slowing down either, with the impending “Year 2” roll-out seeing sixteen new franchises join the already overwhelming roster of characters, as well as a bunch of gameplay improvements for both kids and kids-at-heart alike. Wave 6 hits shelves at the end of week, Friday Sept 3rd.

I got a chance to chat with the developers about the game and try out some of the new levels and characters, and it certainly seems to be a major step-up. Here’s eight of the biggest things I learnt, starting with the return of a freaking icon...
