Metal Gear Rising Revengeance: 10 Reasons It Won't Live Up To The Hype

9. Dirge of Cerberus Syndrome

Remember Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII? No? I'm not too surprised; it was a Final Fantasy spin-off title released about 7 years ago, which placed the protagonist in the shoes of awesome vampire Vincent Valentine, and then set him off on a quest of dull, completely forgettable third-person hack 'n slash missions. The game is largely regarded as an inept and lazy means of milking the Final Fantasy namesake, and frankly, that's all I had echoes of as I played through the Revengeance demo yesterday. There's the overwhelming feeling that it is taking all the successful constituent elements of the Metal Gear Solid franchise - the codec, the awesome ninja, and the aesthetic - and transposing them onto an entirely new mode of play, but without actually taking due care to see if it works, and moreover, if it's really any fun. Despite how long the game has languished in development, one expects on the basis of this demo that the game will be given an extremely mixed fan and critical reception upon full release, much like Dirge of Cerberus.
