One of the most frustrating things for the more casual player in 2K is seeing online opponents with a wealth of top cards within days of the game being released.
People who spend actual money on in-game virtual currency as well as those who are prepared to put the hours in are always going to be at an advantage, but 2K has at least taken steps this year to give everyone a chance early on.
The game will offer players a choice of one of five superstar players to start your squad with. Tracy McGrady, Derrick Rose, Dirk Nowitzki, Vince Carter and Hakeem Olajuwon are the players available at the beginning.
From the five, you'll be able to select one to keep within your squad forever.
Crucially, these five cards will be part of the new evo card sets, giving players the chance to upgrade the card throughout the game by completing certain tasks.
This is a big shift in the way 2K plays and we could see galaxy opals in the game from a very early stage if people put the work in.
