NHL 19 Review: 4 Ups & 2 Downs

1. Veteran Fans Don't Have Much New To Play With

First, a disclaimer: NHL 19 does have new modes, and it does introduce some improvements to things the long-running series has struggled with for a generation. That's besides the point here; to NHL gaming veterans, 19 lacks that one killer new feature that'll make them eager to part with cash.

'Take my money' need not apply if you're already sitting on the fence and own NHL 18.

Aside from a few notable gameplay nuances (which we'll get to), NHL 19 offers up the same action it always does. You'll still be able to pick a team in Franchise Mode, take them to the Stanley Cup and develop young talent like before. There's the familiar 'Be A Pro' option too.

Old-timers who recall with misty-eyed fondness how EA re-developed their series for the 3D age by adding things like Franchise and, eventually, online play. There's no similar bold step forward in NHL 19, and the series even lacks that flashy story mode sports games have become obsessed with.
