Overwatch: Ranking Every Cinematic Short (So Far)
10. Cinematic Trailer
The OG short that introduced everyone to what Overwatch was really all about, this piece is clunky in places (for being the first and earliest of the animated shorts), but it was very effective in getting audiences excited for the game before it came out.
The main characters in the short very strongly resemble the brothers from Jurassic World, more or less filling the archetype of "teen brother who doesn't care that much and little brother who's endlessly enthusiastic and bright-eyed". The setup feels cutesy fun, almost saccharine, but the genuineness and good spirit of this cinematic shines through, especially with Tracer's final words to the boys:
"The world could always use more heroes."
The action in this short also excels, allowing people to get a sense of the characters, their skills, and personalities, and how colourful the world of Overwatch is. It also effectively establishes the lore and history of their world.
This short ranks a bit lower on the list for having more cliches and flatter portrayals of its characters, but that's to be expected in a game that was in its earlier stages, with a story that's being developed to this day.
