14. Yamper
It’s just another dog Pokémon...
Yes, it’s a very cute one at that, but it’s in the same vein as Growlithe, Lillipup and Rockruff, so cuteness alone isn’t really going to make it stand out. Obviously being based on a Corgi pup fits Galar to a tee, but it’s still been largely overshadowed so far.
Much has been made of the poor animations we’ve seen so far, with Game Freak not appearing to have delivered on their promise to up the quality for the first main series entry on the Switch. Yamper’s cameo in the most recent trailer shows him using the move Tail Whip, and this has already become proof enough for the fanbase of Game Freak stumbling yet again.
Rather than whip its tail, or even move it at all, Yamper’s entire character model swings back in forth awkwardly. Considering the sackfuls of money Pokémon makes, it’s way below par and has dampened Yamper’s hype.
If the little Corgi gets a regal evolution which sees it incorporate a tiara or Crown Jewels into its design, its stock may rise a little.
For now though, it’s very meh.
