The third trailer for Rockstar's hugely anticipated Red Dead Redemption 2 has just dropped, and while it sadly didn't show off any concrete gameplay footage, it certainly did reveal a great deal more about the game's plot, characters, tone and general scope.

There's still so much up in the air about RDR2 that it's understandable if some fans are getting frustrated by Rockstar's understated marketing strategy so far, but given that they're one of the most reliable devs in the entire industry, it's hard not to have faith.

What's shown off here looks gloriously cinematic, bleak, brutal and still ludicrously entertaining. If Rockstar doesn't see dollar signs and overdo it with the online features and monetisation nonsense, this should be every bit the titanic, Earth-shattering sequel fans have been waiting almost a decade for.

As the months tick away until it's finally out in the wild, let's pore over every glorious image from the new trailer and break down the crucial takeaways...

16. Dutch's Gang In Action

The new trailer opens with Dutch van der Linde leading his gang to a broken down train, presumably one he and his men had a hand in disabling. He shouts to the passengers inside, "We don't want to kill any of you...but trust me, we will."

Without any response from those inside, Dutch implores his gang, "Wake 'em up a little!", as the half-dozen men all raise their pistols to open fire, just as the scene cuts away.

It remains to be seen exactly what's inside the train carriage, but whatever it is, there's a good chance this is the game's opening set-piece: a riotous heist that introduces the player to Dutch and his band of thieves.
