Resident Evil 6 Announced: Capcom Confirm 20th December 2012 Release

The world will once more be infected by the zombie virus at the end of the year, with the sixth Resident Evil franchise installment set for release.

As predicted (and spoiled by a leaked Gamespot promotional poster, which probably got somebody a stern telling off) Capcom have today announced that Resident Evil 6 will be released on 20th December 2012, following the successful No Hope Left viral campaign that has teased the title in the last couple of days. Alongside the announcement, the development team have released an outstanding new trailer, featuring hints at where the story will take players, as well as confirmation that Leon Kennedy and Chris Redfield will both be playable characters in their own campaigns in the US and China. Here's the trailer in full: Incredibly exciting stuff. The press release that has just landed in my inbox offers a little more detail about the upcoming game - blending action and survival horror, this latest instalment in the multi-million selling franchise, is the most ambitious, immersive and feature rich title of the series to date and promises to be the dramatic horror experience of the year. And here's the early synopsis:
It has been ten years since the Raccoon City incident and the President of the United States has decided to reveal the truth behind what took place in the belief that it will curb the current resurgence in bioterrorist activity. Due to be by the President€™s side is his personal friend and Raccoon City survivor, Leon S. Kennedy, but when the venue suffers a bioterrorist attack, Leon is forced to face a President transformed beyond recognition and make his hardest ever decision. At the same time, Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance member, Chris Redfield arrives in China, itself under threat of a bioterrorist attack. With no country safe from these attacks and the ensuing outbreaks, the entire world€™s population is united by a common fear that there is no hope left.
The game's Exec Producer, Hiroyuki Kobayashi, echoed the overall sentiment that Resident Evil 6 will be the grandest, story-lead addition to the franchise yet, as well as confirming that the tone of the game will welcome in some more chills. €œFrom the outset the team€™s intention was to create an experience that delivers a gripping storyline, tense single-player and co-op action all set against a constant theme of horror. We are calling this fusion dramatic horror and are confident it will resonate with both existing fans of the series as well as newcomers.€ Resident Evil 6 is scheduled for release on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation3 on November 20th, with a Windows PC version to follow.
