Resident Evil 6: Where It Will Succeed and Fail

Resident Evil 6 is due out in a few weeks, but how is the game looking?

Resident Evil 6 is the highly anticipated, true sequel to the lowly received Resident Evil 5, released in 2009. Resident Evil 6 sees series veterans Chris Redfield, Leon Kennedy and Ada Wong fight their way across the globe, joined by a new comer, Jake Wesker. The game aims to be the biggest and best of the series, says developer Capcom. However, fan reception has been mixed. Others couldn't be happier that their favourite characters are all featured in one game, but others think that Resident Evil has finally lost it's way and will never return to its roots. While the series is evolving, there is no doubt that slow zombies, clunky controls and horrific hallways aren't coming back. At least the cheesy dialogue remains, however unintentional. Others say the series couldn't be better, offering a more modern experience. Whatever side of the fence you sit on, Resident Evil is still one of the classics of gaming. It, like Grand Theft Auto and Doom, helped to shape an entire genre singlehandedly, which is quite an achievement. So without further ado, lets look over where RE6 looks good, and not so good.

The Good

The Characters

Resident Evil fans are long divided over their loyalty to series staples' Chris Redfield and Leon Kennedy. Debates like Leon's hair, Chris' muscles, Leon has a cooler voice, Chris is more experienced and so many more often spark up, but now fans don't have to choose any longer. Resident Evil 6 gives us time with them both, the first game in the series to do so. Aside from their different personalities and move sets, they have their own separate campaigns. Leon's story focuses more on action and suspense, like old school RE, whereas Chris is all about the action. That doesn't mean they won't share gameplay types, but at least that's where the focus is. Fans will also get to play Resident Evil 6 as Albert Wesker's son, Jake Wesker. Jake is teamed up with series veteran Sherry Birkin, and the two are in for a more action and setpiece driven affair. Whether or not you will like this depends on how Capcom pulls it off. Once all three campaigns have been completed, another character opens up: Ada Wong. Ada is a fan favourite dating all the way back to RE2, where she met, partnered with and then betrayed Leon Kennedy. Then they did it all over again. It's nice to see Capcom listening to their fans and trying to please them all, so no longer are we stuck with a character we don't click with. Imagine RE5 without Sheva. Ahhhhhhh! These characters will all cross over, and hopefully we'll see an all out Resident Evil war. The Mercenaries mode also returns, giving us the opportunity to team Chris and Leon up to kill some zombies, a dream shared by many a fan. How about Ada and Sherry? Ada and Chris? Jake and Leon? Do it, because you can. Here's hoping we'll see Claire and Jill return in future DLC. Pretty please, Capcom.
