ULTIMATE MARVEL VS. CAPCOM 3: Should It Just Be DLC?

With the announcement of new characters and more for Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, the question being asked is if a disc is needed over DLC.

With releases such as Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 being announced and Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition already hitting the shelves, even some diehard fans are asking the question, why are these being released in disc format and not DLC? In addition to this why are some features only just being added now instead of being standard? While many are still loyal to the two series, I know of people personally who have been disenchanted with the announcement of UMVC3 being released in disc format rather than DLC, when arguably it could have been released as such. UMVC3 is - in my opinion anyway - looking like something of an upgrade to Marvel vc. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds rather than an significantly new experience. The biggest aspect of the new release is arguably the characters, but there is now going to be an online spectator mode (something I would say should have been included in the original game) and various tweaks not only to gameplay but adding in additional moves for existing characters, a list of which you can find here. It might be the case, that when a game actually gets underway that the differences can be felt by those who know the game well enough, but for the more casual players is there really enough apart from more characters to warrent spending more money on the game. If it is one of the few games you play then maybe it is. Adding new characters to the rosta is fair enough by anyones standards, but better suited to DLC. Aspects such as spectator mode, as I have said earlier, should have been included in the original release. With retail in the U.S. set to be around the $40 mark, you are still essentially paying for something that could be added into the game via DLC and update patches, especially when it comes to tweaks in gameplay or new moves for characters. I may be wrong, and it being released as a whole new package might be needed, but I cannot be the only one who is wondering how necessary it really is. Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 is still going to be a enjoyable and playable game almost certainly, but I dont think it is worth practically buying a whole new copy of a game that could have been adjusted with updates and DLC. In the end the fans of the series will speak with their wallets, whether they believe it will make a difference or just out of curiosity.
