10 Best Hard Rock & Heavy Metal Songs Of 2017 (So Far)

2. The Sin & The Sentence - Trivium

As one of metal's elites, any new Trivium track is cause for the entire fandom to take notice. And when you have the first song post-Matt Heafy getting his voice back in shape after some shakier years repairing the damage from screaming his guts out across the 2000s, it really could've gone either way.

Thankfully - and like some Rocky-style stair-climbing celebration - The Sin & the Sentence is a phenomenal track. The culmination of every major creative turn they've taken since Ascendancy, you've got the return of Heafy delivering some of the finest screams in metal, Corey Beaulieu's physics-defying solo speed, and even the advent of blast beats from newcomer Alex Bent, as the band delivers one of their most ferocious closers in years.

Where Vengeance Falls and Silence in the Snow showed the group steadily flexing their muscles for a wider audience, The Sin & the Sentence rolls that together with some of the more time-tested practices first mastered back on Ascendancy, Shogun and In Waves.

Trivium have truly come into their own all over again here, and it's simply an awesome thing to behold.
