2. Depeche Mode - Going Backwards
Basildon's finest returned in 2017 with Spirit, the fourteenth studio album of an acclaimed and monstrously successful career. Written on the eve of the British public's decision to leave the European Union and the ascendancy of Donald Trump to the White House, the band adopted a more explicit political focus than ever before.
The album's opening track, Going Backwards, is also its crowning achievement. Clocking in at around six minutes, the brooding track laments the perceived regression of standards within the human race, foregrounding feelings of alienation and desensitisation, with lead singer Dave Gahan claiming "We're going backwards to a caveman mentality."
The track has been extremely well received by Depeche Mode loyalists, and, in time, will surely cement its legacy as one of the band's finest offerings of the twenty first century.
