10 Covers You Keep Mistaking For The Original Song

8. (I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone - The Monkees

Original Artist: Paul Revere & the Raiders

Speaking of The Monkees, the shoe is on the other foot this time around. As it turns out, they also had great success with re-recording an existing song and thrusting it into the limelight.

However, in this case, there was a much, much smaller window between the two versions. (I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone was originally recorded and released by Paul Revere & The Raiders in May of 1966 to moderate success.

The Monkees would come out with their cover version a mere six months later in November, which would prove to be a monster hit for the band, overshadowing the original straight away and all but leaving it in the dust as the years went on.

Moreover, this is yet another song that has been covered countless times by various different artists over the years, which only made it easier for the actual original version to get lost in the shuffle.
