10 Double Albums Worth Hearing Start To End

The double album, music's great ambition...

Smashing Mellon Collie The double album, music's great ambition. Whether they be concept albums, rock operas, or simply an unstoppable output of excellent music, these albums often find a way to reel you in for the entire performance. The true testament of an artists deepest talents lies within many a bi-folded record. Double albums have been a staple of music culture for decades now, tackled by artists of all genres, from classic rock to rap. Even some punk and hardcore bands have taken on this challenge. From The Beatles to 2Pac, from Husker Du to Arcade Fire, bands from many different generations have poured their hearts and souls into these fantastic projects, with outstanding results. They have created masterpieces that capture your imagination and keep you trapped, seeing their vision through, unable to break away from the glorious works. It takes a certain combination of traits for a band to be able to pull off feat that is the double album. They must have ambition, the ambition to strive for such a remarkable challenge. They must have drive and energy, to put in the time and effort required to complete such a task. But, most importantly, they must have the artistic talent to back it up. They must have the ability to write enough quality music to fill two albums. Not to just fill them with any junk, not to fill them with songs that otherwise would have been scrapped, left for dead on some studio floor. They must be filled with songs that could easily stand on their own, songs that all could vie for single status. The true challenge of the double album is this, no time wasted, no junk, no filler, all hits. Not all double albums are great. While for some it may be the sheer height of their creativity, for others it can be a terribly overdrawn, grand ego stroke. There have been many fantastic double albums over the years, far too many to list here. Some notable albums are missing, though this is not to discredit them in anyway. This is simply too small of a forum to truly list all the greats. This is no penultimate list, this is a mere selection of the finer offerings. There are many more worth sitting down and taking the time to truly appreciate. Let's get started...
