10 Incredible New Pioneers Of Old-School Metal

9. Sludge Metal - Vodun

Mixing exotic melodies, tribal imagery and sludge metal instrumentation, Vodun really shouldn't work.

Yet, it does.

And it does so amazingly.

Currently hot off both their debut album, Possession (2016), and a stunning set at this April's Desertfest in Camden, the British power trio of singer Oya, guitarist Marassa and drummer Ogoun is quite clearly the result of more hallucinogenic drugs than one should consume in their entire lifetime, fuelled by psychedelia in both their colours and riffing.

However, unlike their fellow sludge metal contemporaries, Vodun is dripping with infectious positivity and an almost undefinable, yet alluring charm. Their charisma is second to none, rich in both melody and sheer musical power.

Furthermore, the band is highly innovative in its use of percussion, readily incorporating bongos, tambourines and more into their enticing tunes, going so far as to hand out these instruments during gigs to let the fans add to the acidic anarchy.

A Vodun concert is an experience unlike anything else the world of metal currently offers and because of that, as well as a blistering debut album to their name, this three-piece deserves all the success coming their way.
